discussions on personality theories.
introduction to personality theories.
class objectives included social determinents of personality types and psychological personality roles to human behavior.
excerpt on my additions to the discussion:
"Is Freud's theory a viable theory for modern society? Provide reasons for your view. Discuss how you could apply Freud’s personality theory in your own life.
Personality Theories
Personality theories include: psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, dispositional, biological-evolutionary, and learning (social) cognitive perspectives. (FEIST, 2020., pg. 8)
Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic theorizes early childhood as the focal point and interactions with parents and siblings for shaping personality. (FEIST, 2020., pg. 8)
Humanistic-Existential theory is an assumption that people are driven by positives and away from negativities as road lines defining the lane of their personality. This is by meaning, growth, well-being, and other positives providing psychological growth as well as failure, death, and other negatives. (FEIST, 2020., pg. 8)
Dispositional theory involves uniqueness and long-term tendencies defining personality. These are the types of traits that are the essence of one’s behavior. (FEIST, 2020., pg. 8)
Biological-Evolutionary theory is based on genotype and central nervous system. It suggests the way people think, feel, act, is biologically based as well as the influence of environment. (FEIST, 2020., pg. 8)
Learning (social) cognitive theory suggests that behavior alone determines behavior and not internal thoughts, feelings, drives or motives. Learning occurs through trial-and-error of self and vicariously. (FEIST, 2020., pg. 9)
Freud’s personality theory
“Most of the early personality theorists did not use standardized assessment inventories. Although Freud, Adler, and Jung all developed some form of projective tool, none of them used a technique with sufficient precision to establish its reliability and validity. However, the theories of Freud, Adler, and Jung have spawned a number of standardized personality inventories as researchers and clinicians have sought to measure units of personality proposed by those theorists.” (FEIST, 2020., pg. 17)
Psychoanalytic perspective is that unconscious is more powerful than conscious in addition to early childhood experiences with family developing the personality.
AaliYah’s application
I am not sure, that I fully understand Freud’s personality theory. I read the assigned chapters and I saw quite a few other concepts that I developed an understanding of. The section on personality theories seemed to include many theorists, although it looks like Freud was listed as a key figure and beginning for the psychodynamic perspective so hopefully, I am discussing the right subject here. Although I enjoy psychology as a natural genre, I am new to theories and theorists, and did find it helpful that theory has been thoroughly defined for this class.
As defined here I do think psychoanalytic/psychodynamic is indeed viable to today, however I think the unconscious and conscious go hand-in-hand. Unconscious is not purposefully done and can be seen as a natural reflex and instinct. Conscious is aware and purposefully decisive, which can also be natural but involves a thought-process where unconscious is straight action. I think that the unconscious is first and becomes the conscious. There are many things I’ve done unaware that when I grew and reflected on my actions consciously, they were in alignment with what I consciously did. The only time there was any bit of difference was in the information presented to me and not in my conscious or unconscious actions. If my unconscious self is presented with an enemy squaring up with me to fight, I unconsciously fight. If my conscious self is present with an enemy squaring up with me to fight, I consciously fight. If my unconscious self is presented with an enemy snaking me in an illusive scenario with opposite intention to attack me, I unconsciously view the scenario and when the snake turns, I turn. When presented with the illusion I also consciously switch up, when they switch up. I am unconsciously sweet and caring, and I am also consciously sweet and caring. However, after seeing the number of snakes I’ve been surrounded by I have indeed been consciously withholding my sweetness and care which I see has my unconsciousness following suit. This psychoanalytic/psychodynamic is also touching on the learning (social) cognitive theory, because, I’ve learned that everyone is not worthy of my Nature. And although I am being myself for me, they seem to take me being myself as if they are getting something from me – which is incorrect. I am not giving anything away by being sweet, I just am. But I also will not be friendly to a known enemy. This takes me into the other concepts that I learned through the assigned readings: displacement and reaction formation. Although I could describe these things accurately before this class, I did not really understand what I was saying is a psychology concept. I intuitively put into words what I observed from my interactions with humans and now that I am in this class and reading these philosophies, I see that these are actual things studied. I cannot relate on my own, I’ve only been the recipient of such behavior – personally I handle all things directly with each person I feel a way about. I am seeing now how rare that is. If I feel the need to defend myself, I do; I do not deal with defense mechanisms, but clearly everyone who opposes me does. If I had a mother and didn’t like her, I would remove my presence from her, I would not respond with repression, reaction formation, displacement, fixation, regression, projection, or sublimination. It seems the anxiety that humans are choosing to be fake to escape is simply the opportunity to make a decision and stand on it, but instead many cower and do not remain true to their feelings and act on their feelings, which would be a more lighthearted way of being.
